You Made It Through Another Year of Parenting: The Toughest Job In the World!
Congratulations: You've made it through another year parenting, the toughest job in the world. Pat yourself on the back. Look back over the year and commend yourself on your successes. Don't worry about those days you didn't feel went as well as you would have liked; focus on the days you felt successful. Those few moments when your children spoke with you politely or shared something with you that they might have held back in the past. Be grateful for those moments of real affection and be happy for the moments of calm.
Raising children, helping them to develop into people with the values you have worked so hard to establish as important to them is no easy feat and does not come with a smooth flow. There are good times and bad times. Again, we are in that rythmn of life. The flow of the ocean is in and out, high tide and low tide. The day is always followed by night. We would not be able to appreciate the good times without having the experience of the bad times. Just know that there is a rhythm. For every bad day, there will be a flow of a good day, just not always in the time span that we would like.
Remember to listen. Listen with your heart as your child talks with you. What is important to your child may not seem important to you but REMEMBER it is important to your child. Respect your child. When your child feels respected, they are less likely to give you disrespect. This can be a challenge but learn to hold your tongue. How often do we wish we could take back what we have said? Try not to speak out of anger. Remove yourself. Take time away from the emotional situation so that your emotions do not rule you. When you discuss it, don't be in the "feeling" of anger; be back in your head. You cannot take words back and often they come back to haunt you. Take space as you need it. You are human and have needs too. Don't forget to take care of yourself. You are not just responsible for the children, you are responsible for you. Parenting is the toughest job in the world. Make sure you take care of you too.
Congratulate yourself on another year of parenting. I hope the year went well. Happy New Year and look forward to the next. Maturity is a wonderful thing. Congratulate yourself for your success in parenting, the toughest job in the world.
